Backline Music Gear
Southern California
Department: Sales & Client Care

Love Music & Genuinely Enjoy Helping People?

At Backline Music Gear, we're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys taking care of people.

Someone friendly, attentive, dependable, resourceful, and naturally helpful. Someone who listens, remembers the details, enjoys finding solutions, and takes pride in making things easier for others.

The kind of person who notices what needs attention and naturally takes care of it — sometimes before anyone has to ask.

If you also love music, know gear, and enjoy helping people find the right products and solutions, we'd love to meet you.

As a Music Gear Sales & Client Care Representative, you'll help musicians, artists, touring professionals, educators, studios, organizations, parents, developing players, and everyday customers receive the knowledgeable and personal service Backline is known for.

Our goal is simple:

When someone needs music gear or support, we want them to know they can call Backline and we'll take care of them.

About Backline Music Gear

Backline Music Gear is more than a music store.

We're a music company built around service, relationships, experiences, and a genuine passion for helping people.

Our work extends across multiple departments and includes music gear, professional equipment, special ordering, backline, onsite services, education, production, and other solutions for the people and organizations we serve.

We're passionate about what we do, take pride in doing it well, and believe every person on our team contributes to the overall Backline experience.

As Backline continues to grow, we're looking for great people who share that approach.

What You'll Do

This is a hands-on role where client care, music gear, sales, problem-solving, and organization come together.

Throughout your day, you may move between calls, emails, online inquiries, product research, quotes, orders, vendor communication, administrative work, client follow-ups, and new sales opportunities.

You'll:

We don't expect you to know every answer. We expect you to care enough to find it — and follow through once you do.

Help First. Sell Naturally.

This is a sales position, but we believe great sales begins with great service.

If someone calls looking for a keyboard, guitar, drum kit, microphone, or piece of professional equipment, don't just sell them what's in front of you.

Talk to them.

Understand what they're doing, what problem they're trying to solve, what matters to them, and what they may need to make the entire setup work.

Sometimes that means recommending an additional cable, case, stand, accessory, service, or piece of equipment.

That's not about selling someone more for the sake of selling more.

It's about completing the solution.

Once you've helped someone find the right solution, asking:

“Would you like me to get that ordered for you?”

should feel natural.

Our approach is:

Helpful. Knowledgeable. Personal. Confident. Never pressured.

Take Ownership

You'll have clear responsibilities, priorities, and support from the team — along with room to use your judgment and manage what's in front of you.

A client emails — you take care of it.

You promised someone an answer — you find it.

A quote needs to go out — you send it.

A vendor hasn't responded — you follow up.

A client is waiting — you keep them informed.

Something needs attention — you notice it.

You'll sometimes have several conversations, orders, emails, quotes, and follow-ups moving at once. Being organized, prioritizing well, documenting what happened, and closing the loop are important parts of this position.

When you tell someone, “I'll take care of it,” following through is simply how you work.

Relationships Matter

We want our team to get to know the people we serve.

If you're helping a drummer, learn what they play.

If you're speaking with an educator, understand their program.

If you're helping a touring musician, understand what they're preparing for.

If a studio contacts us, learn about their setup.

If someone is purchasing their first instrument, remember that the experience may be incredibly important to them.

Those details help us provide better service today and build relationships that can last for years.

Meaningful client information should also be documented so the appropriate Backline team members and departments can continue providing great service.

Ultimately, we want clients to think:

“Call Backline. They'll take care of it.”

When Our Clients Are Taken Care Of, We Keep Building

Once current clients, orders, quotes, and follow-ups are handled, look for the next opportunity to help.

That might mean reconnecting with a previous client, following up on an open quote, checking in on an earlier inquiry, researching a potential relationship, or introducing Backline to a musician, educator, studio, church, production company, venue, or professional organization.

The question is simple:

Who else can we help?

We're interested in genuine conversations and long-term relationships — not robotic sales scripts.

Sometimes a conversation creates a sale today.

Sometimes it creates an opportunity months from now.

Both matter.

What You'll Bring

There isn't only one background that can make someone great at this job.

You may be a musician, producer, engineer, gear enthusiast, or someone with music retail experience. You may also come from hospitality, sales, concierge service, luxury retail, or another high-touch customer environment and have a strong connection to music.

We're especially interested in someone who:

Knowledge of musical instruments, drums, guitars, bass, keyboards, professional audio, recording, live sound, DJ equipment, touring, production, backline, or music education is especially valuable.

Knowledge can grow. The desire to help people needs to already be there.

Life at Backline

Backline is made up of different departments, each with its own responsibilities and expertise, but we create experiences together.

We communicate, share information, respect each other's roles, help one another when needed, and take pride in doing our part well.

We like to overdeliver when we can, accommodate reasonable requests, anticipate needs, and find solutions.

We value a positive, peaceful, collaborative, can-do atmosphere where people can work hard, enjoy what they do, ask for help when they need it, offer help when they can, and take pride in what we accomplish together.

There will be busy days, unusual requests, last-minute changes, and challenges to solve. That's part of working in music, retail, backline, production, and client services.

We approach those moments by communicating, helping each other, and focusing on what we can do.

We believe great teams light each other up.

And there's a simple idea behind the way we approach our work:

Whenever possible, leave people better than you found them.

Less stressed. More confident. More excited. Better prepared. Better equipped.

Or simply in a better mood because of the experience they had with us.

That applies to our clients, guests, artists, partners — and our teammates.

The experience we create for our clients begins with the way we work with one another.

What You Can Look Forward To

Depending on position, eligibility, availability, and company policy:

We work hard together, and we believe in celebrating together, too.

Whether it's a holiday, company milestone, team accomplishment, or simply recognizing great work, we want the people at Backline to know their contribution matters.

Grow With Backline

As Backline continues to grow, strong team members may have opportunities to develop into areas such as Senior Sales, Professional Accounts, Client Relations, Artist Relations, Institutional Sales, Team Leadership, and Sales Management.

You don't need to walk through the door knowing everything.

Come ready to help people, learn, contribute, take ownership, and do your job exceptionally well.

How to Apply

Please submit your résumé along with a brief introduction.

We'd also love to hear:

  1. What instrument(s) do you play, or what areas of music and gear do you know best?

  2. What do you genuinely enjoy about helping people?

  3. Tell us about a time someone needed something and you took it upon yourself to make sure it was handled.

Don't worry about writing the perfect response.

We'd rather get to know the person behind the résumé.

If you love music, enjoy helping people, take pride in what you do, and get satisfaction from making things happen, we'd genuinely like to meet you.
